Protecting Your Skin from the
Sun –An ayurvedic perspective
With the onset of summer our exposure to the sun will increase as more
and more of us will go outside for something or the other. But by increasing
sun exposure, exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays also increases. Fortunately,
Ayurveda gives us remedies that we can use to keep our skin healthy and
radiant.
But the exposure to the sun is also necessary. It is the best natural
source of vitamin D, which is necessary for the absorption of calcium and
healthy bones. Many doctors today recommend 15 minutes of direct exposure to
the mild sun on the hands and face to absorb the minimum daily requirement of

chemicals make the skin photosensitive, so more likely to be sunburned and
damaged.
Adequate diet
It is also a good idea
to cool the body from the inside if the skin is very photosensitive. Eating
green leafy vegetables and fruits like raisins, sweet and juicy pears, sweet
apples and pomegranates, for example, will help nourish and restore balance in
the skin.
Use Sunscreen to protect the skin
For daily use and
casual sun exposure, apply sunscreen to the sensitive areas of the face, neck
and chest. Stay active in the sun and try to avoid direct exposure during peak
hours between 10 am and 3 pm.
Incase of a sunburn use
a combination of turmeric, which has antibacterial and antibacterial properties
